Kenya: Africa Adorned – a Long History of Beads And Deeds

Components[ edit ] Beads can be made of many different materials. The earliest beads were made of a variety of natural materials which, after they were gathered, could be readily drilled and shaped. As humans became capable of obtaining and working with more difficult materials, those materials were added to the range of available substances. But nowadays synthetic materials were added. In modern manufacturing, the most common bead materials are wood, plastic , glass , metal , and stone. Natural materials[ edit ] Beads are still made from many naturally occurring materials, both organic i. However, some of these materials now routinely undergo some extra processing beyond mere shaping and drilling such as color enhancement via dyes or irradiation. The natural organics include bone , coral , horn , ivory , seeds such as tagua nuts , animal shell , and wood. For most of human history pearls were the ultimate precious beads of natural origin because of their rarity; the modern pearl-culturing process has made them far more common. Amber and jet are also of natural organic origin although both are the result of partial fossilization.

Share 0 An international team of researchers and archaeologists, led by Oxford University has new dating evidence indicating when the earliest fully modern humans arrived in the Near East, the region known as the Middle East today. They have obtained the radiocarbon dates of marine shell beads found at Ksar Akil, a key archaeological site in Lebanon, which allowed them to calculate that the oldest human fossil from the same sequence of archaeological layers is 42, —41, years old.

This is significant because the age of the earliest fossils, directly and indirectly dated, of modern humans found in Europe is roughly similar. This latest discovery throws up intriguing new possibilities about the routes taken by the earliest modern humans out of Africa, says the study published online by the journal PLOS ONE. The research team radiocarbon dated 20 marine shells from the top 15 metres of archaeological layers at Ksar Akil, north of Beirut.

The shells were perforated, which indicates they were used as beads for body or clothes decoration by modern humans. Neanderthals, who were living in the same region before them, were not making such beads. The study confirms that the shell beads are only linked to the parts of the sequence assigned to modern humans and shows that through direct radiocarbon dating they are between 41, —35, years old. The Middle East has always been regarded as a key region in prehistory for scholars speculating on the routes taken by early humans out of Africa because it lies at the crossroads of three continents — Africa, Asia and Europe.

It was widely believed that at some point after 45, years ago early modern humans arrived in Europe, taking routes out of Africa through the Near East and, from there, along the Mediterranean rim or along the River Danube. However, this dating evidence suggests populations of early modern humans arrived in Europe and the Near East at roughly the same time, sparking a new debate about where the first populations of early humans travelled from in their expansion towards Europe and which alternative routes they may have taken.

The Radiometric Dating Game Radiometric dating methods estimate the age of rocks using calculations based on the decay rates of radioactive elements such as uranium, strontium, and potassium. On the surface, radiometric dating methods appear to give powerful support to the statement that life has existed on the earth for hundreds of millions, even billions, of years.

We are told that these methods are accurate to a few percent, and that there are many different methods. We are told that of all the radiometric dates that are measured, only a few percent are anomalous. This gives us the impression that all but a small percentage of the dates computed by radiometric methods agree with the assumed ages of the rocks in which they are found, and that all of these various methods almost always give ages that agree with each other to within a few percentage points.

The construction of buttons in this period was accomplished one of three ways; casting in metal, construction in metal, and construction from organic elements. The most common shape of this time period was a rounded or slightly flattened ball with a shank. The evolution of buttons has some bearing on the resultant buttons from the above noted time period. Several sources, Dress Accessories; Medieval Finds from Excavations in London among them, show buttons to have been in common usage in England and Europe by the early 13th century.

The buttons excavated from the London sites fall into the above mentioned three construction categories. Specifically found have been cast buttons with integral shanks or embedded shanks, buttons constructed from various metal elements which have been stamped or embellished and then soldered together, and buttons made from cloth and thread.

The size of the buttons from these excavations range between 8 and There is also evidence to suggest that buttons occurred much earlier, even prior to the 9th century. Specifically, buttons have been found in Anglo-Saxon burial sites on tunics. In a site in Ireland, circa 8th century, a metal shank button with an enameled triskele design was found.

What is the difference between “antique” and “vintage”? Strictly speaking antique items must be at least years old and vintage must be at least 50 years old, BUT, I have used the terms rather loosely, based more on stylistic characteristics than strictly on age. It is often very difficult to date a rosary because some styles were used for decades. I try my best to describe a general age for the rosaries. New to me is ‘s to the present and you will not find many rosaries on my site of this age.

How do I know it is silver? This is the reason items had to be marked with “sterling”, ” “, ” ” etc..
